Auditions: Dallas

Summary "American Idol" - "Auditions: Dallas" - Jan. 27, 2010

We are in the Lone Star state and our guest judges are Neil Patrick Harris and Joe Jonas.

Ryan says 11,000 have shown up to audition.

NPH jokingly says he hopes to make people cry.

We get a montage of previous Texas hopefuls including Kelly Clarkson and a woman named Julie who auditioned the same year, tragically. She says she's taken acting classes since then. Vocal lessons would've been better as her take on "Black Velvet" is not much better than her "Lady Marmalade." NPH says it was not good. She keeps trying to sing until she's escorted out. Four no's. She keeps singing as she leaves, blaming her breath control.

We get a montage of yes's to happy women.

Then we meet a guy named Lloyd who likes to the robot. He has two daughters and shows pictures of them. We also see footage of his job and home. He sings "Overjoyed" and it's nice. They all like him and Simon calls him his favorite so far. Four yes's.

We get a montage of Simon and NPH disagreeing over several contestants.

Up next is Kimberly who sings an original song a snappy poppy-jazzy-r&b thing. She's a little shouty but has a good voice. Randy likes it. Simon doesn't think she's current. NPH disagrees and thought she was great. As does Kara. Three yes's.

We get a few snippets of the local Fox station media coverage who cover a guy named Dexter who is insanely confident in himself. He sings "If I Ever Fall in Love Again" in a way that makes you wonder why he was so confident. Simon promises his smile will take him far. Four no's.

We get the teary montage of no's.

Ryan interviews NPH who says he's surprised by the talent.

Erica is a grad student who wants to be an actor. She was on "Barney" as a child. She promises to take a different approach and walks in dressed in leather, wielding a whip. They make her sing the "Barney" "I love you, you love me" song. She sounds good. For real she sings "Free Your Mind" and cracks the whip for emphasis. Four yes's.

We get a montage of yes's.

The final contestant of day one is Dave who has had a tough life due to his diagnosis of Tourette's Syndrome. He explains it as we see him rake and fish and mow the lawn. The only outward signs or throat clearing and a bit of head twitching. He says it doesn't affect him when he's singing. He sings "Bring it On Home to Me" and he sounds good. They like his voice. Simon thinks people are going to like him. Four yes's.

We get a montage of the 15 golden ticket winners celebrating.

Day 2

Guest judge Joe Jonas is excited to be coming to his hometown.

First up is Todrick who appeared with Fantasia in "Color Purple." He sings an original tune that incorporates all the judges and a little "Idol" history. It's actually kinda catchy and he has a good voice. Randy thinks he's one of the best. Joe thinks he has star power. Simon thinks he's nice and a good singer but not jumping out of his chair. Four yes's.

We get a montage of other yes's.

Megan has her little brother in tow, who is very excited for her. She sings "To Make You Me Feel My Love." She rushes a little and starts off quietly but busts out and has a nice vibe. Four yes's.

Vanessa is very chipper and colorfully dressed and has a cheerleader-esque personality. She sings "At Last" and has major pitch issues and moves around oddly. Even Joe Jonas can't stop himself from laughing. Simon says that was his nightmares look and sound like. Four no's. She's still chipper.

We get a montage of many seasons of auditions with trainwrecks in service of Ryan defending Simon's sometimes mean comments because his job is long and difficult.

The final constestant is 16-year-old Christian who had leukemia as a child. She went into remission at age 8. Her mother is very supportive. She sings "All I Could Do is Cry" and, for 16, she's very poised. She doesn't have the very best voice but generally she's good. They like her voice and her bravery. Four yes's.

Overall 31 folks got golden tickets.
