Summary
"American Idol" - Top Nine Results Show - April 1, 2009
Ryan informs us that 36 million votes came in and banters with the judges
In the audience: Jason Castro, Alexis Grace
Ford Commercial: "Mixed Up." It's a tri-level screen that constantly moves like the opening sequence of "Ugly Betty" interspersing the Idols faces and parts of a Ford.
Group Lip-Synch: "Don't Stop Believin'," Journey. They've solved the Scott problem this week by parking him behind a keyboard, unfortunately blindness and lip-synching don't mix well and he's "singing" way off the microphone.
Video Package: We get a glimpse at a "typical" week: photo shoots, red carpets, Ford video shoots, fooling around together at the house. Matt does an impression of Danny in the video so Ryan makes Danny do one of Matt live. And Allison does one of Danny. Anoop does one of Kris. Allison does one of Danny.
Results: It's time for split groups: Megan, Matt, and Kris in one. Adam, Lil, and Allison in the second. Scott, Danny, and Anoop in the third. No results actually given.
Performance: David Cook, "Come Back to Me." It's a very even-keeled song, not terribly exciting. He's singing it well though. (Apparently, this was taped earlier this week because David had a family emergency). Ryan asks him what the most valuable lesson he learned on Idol was. He goes with perspective and says it's a constant pinch-me moment. Ryan presents him with a platinum plaque. He gets teary, very sweetly, and says he put out a solo album pre-Idol and it sold 1000 copies in one year. So to sell a million in three months is blowing his mind.
Results: Kris, Matt, Lil, Adam, Danny, and Scott are safe Megan, Allison, and Anoop are in the bottom three. Megan can't stop waving and smiling nuttily.
Performance: "Poker Face," Lady GaGa. She starts seated at the piano doing a faux-soul songbird rendition singing live. She's accompanied by a fiddler and is wrapped up in what looks like a cross between aluminum foil and film stock. Then the song segues into the uptempo dance number it is. There's lots of dry ice and flailing and sawing away on the fiddle. She has a zipper glued over one eye. She gets a big ovation.
Ryan asks Simon of the bottom three how many are worth saving. One, he says, clearly meaning Allison.
Going Home:Megan Joy. They don't even pretend like they're going to save her and she re-sings her song with vim, vigor, and plenty of her trademark physical awkwardness. As is sometimes the case, the vocal is better tonight. She thanks all the people who work on Idol, the contestants, the judges, and teafully tells her baby, she's coming home.
