Summary Vernon Gosney is 19 and estranged from his parents when he arrives at a small commune in the idyllic Californian countryside called The People's Temple with his young wife, Cheryl. Thirteen year old Leslie Wagner Wilson is brought to live at the commune by her single mother. With charismatic leader Jim Jones' healing miracles and emphasis on social equality for all, Vernon and Leslie both feel like they've found a beautiful way of life. But their paradise soon becomes a prison as Jim Jones turns to violence and mind control and moves the community to a remote jungle location in Guyana. Stuck in the jungle with no means of contacting the outside world and a despotic leader obsessed with mass suicide, Vernon and Leslie are desperate to escape. But will they make it out in time?
