Summary A woman is found dead at the foot of the Brocken after Halloween. Chief Inspector Doreen Brasch does not initially associate the murder with superstitious or even spiritual rituals. The fact is strange though. The body was burned, on a kind of pyre. And finally it turns out that the victim was tortured - with methods of the medieval Inquisition. Who is behind this act? The victim, Tanja Edler, returned to the Harz Mountains from Berlin just a year and a half ago to take over the family-run hotels. Now her mother, Stefanie Edler, decides to postpone her own retirement because she doesn't trust her son Reiko to run the business. Since her return, Tanja Edler has belonged to a coven, a group of modern witches. Their meetings are particularly popular with the men in town, above all with the doctor Dr. Petersen, for lack of understanding. During her investigation, Brasch does not fail to notice how deeply divided the relationship between women and men is. Together with Kriminalrat Lemp, she tries to get to the heart of this rift in order to convict the perpetrator. "Burning witches" is about strong women and powerless men who can only explain the successes, the aspirations, the power of women by saying that the devil must have acted.
