Summary While the Brunettis were on literary trip to England, Vice-Questore Patta personally conducted an investigated, assisted by sycophant Alvise, into the murder of a rich, generally hated, stingy hag and officially closed it after blaming Rumanian illegal cleaning lady Nicolescu, who fell to her death while chased by the police. Brunetti can't and won't ignore indications that Nicolescu, whose son Gabriel swears to make someone pay, couldn't be the murderer.
