Summary Principal Peter Gärber is skull-smashed by a water crate from the high teachers common room while leaving his gymnasium. Gärber was an unpopular, pedantic and tyrannical old-fashioned, even belittling mathematics teacher. Prime suspect is brilliant student Kai Franke, whose graduation he threatened, as the knave maintains on false pretexts. Kai flees for the police, temporarily avoiding questioning, having suffered extraordinary abuses. Gärber also was the haughty co-champion in the adult exclusive Wismar chess club, bitterly rivaling an architect for the sole qualification in the annual regional championship, and actually in another field.
