Greta (16) and Caterina (11), who grew up in a difficult and atypical family, with an absent father and a mother suffering from neurosis and madness, spend the summer with their grandfather Franco, who survived a great earthquake in central Italy. The two girls, bound to live with him in the SAE (emergency housing solutions), will absorb the discomfort and disturbances caused by the loss of home, memories and identity from the evacuation of the earthquake. Since four years after the tragedy of the earthquake that destroyed central Italy, this story is about rebirth with its fragility and narrates its wounds into iconic and poetic images in balance between the redundant legacy of the past and the desire for redemption.
The whole plot, the characters and their transformations, are all centered around the theme of lost identity and of disturbing homologation due to the monochrome reality of SAE and the daily lives of its inhabitants. The external and alien presence of a setting so neutral is confusing, together with the absence of personalisation and rigid architecture that leave no space to the lively rural community that was normally so distinctive. This is the story of Greta and Caterina, two sisters who survived a difficult family characterised by disharmony, craziness and psychological issues Great, the captain of a football team, lives her life aggressively, as a mechanism of self defense to keep people away. She is always protecting herself, and she is always haunted by thoughts, never letting herself be exposed or show any weakness. Caterina, on the other hand, is pure craziness. She is almost deaf, so since she was a child has developed all her other senses. She can see what others cannot and believes what everyone else doesn't She tries to communicate with aliens as she believes that she is not deaf, but simply her hearing is synced with the wrong planet. Constantly divided and aggressive towards one another, fueled by the desire to the escape reality that made them who they are, after another dangerous and psychotic episode of their mother, they are taken by the social services and given to the care of Ines' father, the only living relative who is able to host them. That's how they find themselves in a space far too small to take care of their own sense of self, the SAE, a housing emergency complex setting before was a lieval town, now it's the gathering of yellow and brown houses with a rigid geometry that mirrors a dystopian reality. What seems ordinary, it's chaos, what seems dean is sick, dirt. The two sisters, forced to live in a decaying community, re-discover a strong bond never explored before with their grandfather who becomes an instrument of redemption and escape.
