S1.E1 ∙ Star Crossed Lovers

Have you ever been tempted to fall in love with your best friend?

Kikuji is the scion of an Osaka merchant family whose traditional power is matrilineal. Instructed by his overbearing mother and grandmother to give them an heiress for the family business, he stands by helplessly as his wife is thrown out of the house for producing a son. Driven to a life of dissipation - his mistresses also fail to produce daughters - in the end he is just too tired to care. The film presages Ichikawa's The Makioka Sisters in its World War II nostalgia and visual sophistication.

In the occupied Vienna of the post-war years, it is once again Karl Bockerer who, in a charming and defiant manner, offers his naive resistance to the ruling powers. This time, his doggedness is directed against the Russian occupiers, whose inhuman severity jeopardizes the happiness of two lovers. Although Elena and Gustl are brought together by fate, it is Karl Bockerer who leads them both with skill and cunning out of the danger zone.

On a bus somewhere in London, a young man on his way to work sets off on a journey filled with eccentric characters and dark comedy. This is a small tale of frustration and dramatic tension!
