Summary Mangal Pandey is often referred to as the Indian rebel who shot the first bullet during the rebellion of 1857. Employed as a Sepoy in the 34th Bengal Native infantry regiment of the British East India company Company, Mangal Pandey revolted, when the British introduced bullets smeared with cow and boar pig meat lard which was unholy to the Hindu and Muslim communities in India. He was arrested and hanged on 8th April 1857.
