Summary Visually impaired Tom van Hulle 's father Sjoerd recently moved his his family to Hughevliet, where he became chief of detectives. Tom 'Cappie' and bratty tomboy classmate Sammy, so far his only school friend, discover a tree-house and find a strange machine hidden inside. After dark falls, they notice a man lurking around (Laurens Stalawsky), who gets knocked unconscious by a hooded man. Vermeer's famous painting 'Girl with Pearl' was stolen from the local museum's exhibition, but the kids still ignore that when they say robbery-related clippings on the wall of his nearby home in the wood.
