Summary A competition is taken place in the city hall of Champignac. The competition is about to find the scientist who invented the best replacement for gas. It is the Count of Champignac against Don Vito Cortizone: The Count of Champignac with an ecofriendly essence of mushrooms, Vito Cortizone with a highly toxic fuel. Vito wants the whole world to fuel with his new gas. That is the reason why he takes part at the Dessert Valley Rallye because his win would make his gas famous throughout the whole world. Spirou and Fantasio want to prevent this and they start with Penelope and with the essence from the Count. During the rallye Vito plays bad tricks on them but with some help and cleverness they win the race in the end. The Count of Champignac is honored with a monument because he invented the ecofriendly essence.
