Summary Arsène Lupin escaped the capture by Commissioner Ganimard for the umpteenth time when he reads in the newspaper the death of Colonel Tarnowski after an accident. Lupin had saved Tarnowski's life in the war, he does not believe in the accident and in the guise of the French military attaché he moves to Warsaw with the trusted Grognard. Here he meets Count Orlowski, the self-styled Countess Natasha and witnesses the murder of Tarnowski's son. Lupin is therefore present at the opening of the will, but the snuffbox, a gift from Napoleon, which the colonel had promised to inherit, is not mentioned. And the mysterious treasure of Maria Walewska turns up.
