Summary Paris is celebrating the Dauphin's coming of age. A grand gala is organized in honor of this royal event and the Provost Marshal is charged with watching over the festivities instead of Monsieur de Sartine. Nicolas Le Floch is worried and it is not long before his concerns are proven to be well founded: a massacre mars the revelry. At the scene of the incident, Bourdeau, Le Floch's deputy, is drawn to the corpse of a young woman. The victim seems to have been strangled and Nicolas has her taken to the Basse Geôle for an autopsy. Monsieur de Sartine orders him to investigate.
