The Liberation of Warsaw

Summary Dr Alexandra Richie joins us again to talk about the events that occurred between the end of the Warsaw Uprising and the "liberation" of the city by Russian troops in January 1945, which in reality marked the beginning of another dark chapter in Poland's history. The Vistula-Oder Offensive was a Red Army operation in January 1945. The army made a major advance into German-held territory, capturing Krakow, Warsaw and Poznan. The Red Army had built up their strength around a number of key bridgeheads, with two fronts commanded by Marshal Georgy Zhukov and Marshal Ivan Konev. This advance followed others that took place after the Warsaw Uprising.
