Later someone plants a bomb at Cates' house killing his wife and daughter. Cates goes on a bender. His boss suggests he go into hiding as a trucker. But first he goes after the criminal's enforcer, thinking he was the one who killed his family.

Hardesty lets him go investigate and he does. He talks to the detective working the case but on orders from Hardesty doesn't say much. He eventually finds himself in the clutches of the brothers' rival. And he forms an alliance with them.
