Bottomless Pit

Summary On the way to the Bottomless Pit, Diver Dan inadvisedly pauses to tell Doc Sturgeon that Glow Fish is dying from the strains of recovering the shell-o-phone in shallower depths than those to which he is used. Dan holds up Glow Fish and asks Doc how long Glow Fish can last. Doc says that this will depend upon how quickly Glow Fish can be returned to the Bottomless Pit, and sighs that they must hurry. Dan continues the journey. They find their way to the sign-post seen in the previous episode. Dan expresses surprise at its presence; Doc explains that Scout Fish has placed the signs because it is easy to get lost and there are many surrounding dangers. Dan declares that the Bottomless Pit is just ahead (though the sign seems to indicate only direction and not distance), and calls for Doc to come with him. Doc expresses the hope that they will be in time. Baron Barracuda and Trigger Fish have been observing them. The Baron tells Trigger that they should be alert, as they will have a chance for revenge; they swim to the sign-post. Dan and Doc continue, eventually reaching the Bottomless Pit, which Doc identifies as such to Dan. Doc reports that Glow Fish lives three-quarters of the way down, and tells Dan to drop the Glow Fish into the Pit, that the pressure will restore him. Dan expresses hope, and says good bye as he releases him into the Pit. Glow Fish sinks as Dan and Doc watch. Glow Fish appears visibly to improve as he reaches the level at which he'd greeted Seabiscuit the Seahorse. Doc expresses relief and satisfaction. Baron Barracuda bumps into the sign-post, and demands to know why Trigger did not watch where the Baron was going. Trigger protests B-b-b-b-but I don't know where we're going!, which inspires the Baron. He directs Trigger to join him in rotating the signs so that Dan will never find his way back. They push the signs so that the sign which showed the direction to Minerva's Palace now points in the direction of the Teetering Rock. Dan and Doc continue to watch the apparent recovery of Glow Fish. Doc expresses continued optimism, as Glow Fish begins to swim. With Glow Fish on the mend, Doc urges that they go to Miss Minerva's place, to end the worries of the others. Dan agrees, but then is signaled to prepare for ascent. He requests a few more minutes from the Captain, and this time is granted. Dan tells Doc that he is anxious to meet the mermaid and to put the minds of the others at rest. Doc says that they should return to the sign-post and take-up the path from there. As the Baron and Trigger watch from hiding, Dan and Doc return to the sign-post. As Dan, reading the sign, says that they must go in the direction shown for Minerva's Palace, Doc remarks that they must take care not to go in the direction of the Teetering Rock, as it is very dangerous. Dan declares that he has little time and hopes that the Palace is close; Doc assures him that it must be. Trigger praises the Baron's plan, and the Baron expresses his gloating.
