Soon-shin returns to Seoul to take the military service exam, and dying Mijin watches Soon-shin from afar. Soon-shin shows exceptional talent in the exams but falls from his horse hurting his leg. He gets up despite his injuries and finishes his test with ovation of the people. Proud and reassured, Mijin dies in peace. In 1586, after ten years in military service, Yi Soon-shin is assigned as a garrison captain of Chosan Fort in Hamkyung Province. He is attacked on his way to his new post by the Jurchen nomads but rescued with help from a mysterious man.
