Summary Hayley Wickenheiser is regarded as one of the best female hockey players in the world. The five-time Olympic medalist from Shaunavon, Saskatchewan, began her career as a professional athlete at age 15 when she was chosen for the Canadian Women's National Team. With the help from her uncompromising determination and her lethal slap shot, Wickenheiser led the team to six gold medals and one silver medal at the Women's World Hockey Championships. She earned a silver medal at the 1998 Winter Olympics and four Olympic gold medals in 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2014 winter games. She made hockey history as the first female hockey player to get a point in a men's professional game with the Kirkkonummen Salamat of the Finnish second division in January 2003. Wickenheiser also played for another men's hockey team in Eskilstuna, Sweden in the 2008-2009 season. Her hard work has not gone unnoticed. Sports Illustrated named her number 20 of the Top 25 Toughest Athletes in the World in 2008. She is a two-time finalist for the Women's Sports Foundation Team Athlete of the Year and was named among the Globe and Mail's ""Power 50"" influencers in sport. Wickenheiser is also an award winner, community leader, mentor, history-maker and an accomplished businesswoman.
