Summary Sheila Marcelo was born and raised in the Philippines and later relocated to the United States with her family in 1977. While she was an undergraduate student at Mount Holyoke College, she met her husband and became pregnant during her sophomore year. Marcelo balanced earning her M.B.A. and J.D. degrees at Harvard University while raising her two young boys. Her passion for technology grew during her career and was fueled by her belief that it can help solve real problems. When she entered the workforce, she joined Upromise, a company that helped families save for college, where she served as Vice President of product management and marketing. Eventually, during her role as an Entrepreneur in Residence at Matrix Partners, she began to develop Care.com. Marcelo's company was among one of the first internet companies that's both female founded and funded. Today, Care.com is the world's largest online resource for finding and managing family care and has millions of members across 16 countries. Among her many accolades for her work, she received one of the highest honors for Filipinos, the Filipino Heritage Award, from President Benigno Aquino III of the Philippines. In 2010, she founded WomenUp.org to increase women's roles in the global economy by providing leadership training, mentorship and support to girls and women.
