The desert lies at the foot of the Altai Mountains at an altitude of 1500 meters above sea level. In 1975, the Great Gobi Reserve was declared here, which became the fourth largest nature reserve in the world. It is the northernmost place in the world where you can meet camels, but also white leopards, gazelles and sheep. In the middle of the desert is the town of Dalandzadgad, but you can find nomads with their yurts practically all over the Gobi. They drown with dried dung, make sheep's cheese, drink fermented mare's milk kumis in the evenings, and tell the story of the mythical Olga Chorchoj or the desert man Almaz.
