Summary In the mid-1800s Japanese leadership discovered western civilization had over taken Japan in industrialization. Government programs proved too expensive to close the gap so it embarked on a program of privatization which created the Zaibatsu, a group of families whose companies came to totally controlled the Japan economy. In the 1930s a military government took control of the government and began dismantling the Ziabatsu. So wealthy were these families that it took over twenty years and several wealth redistribution programs.
