Iran: Khamseh

Summary Kefah enjoys true Oriental hospitality visiting Banavat town in the rural region northeast of Shiraz where an Arab tribe lives midst a sea of Iranians, mostly in tiny tent settlements. They are some 14.000 semi-nomadic shepherds and speak a difficult dialect. Their five tribes immigrated from Iraq, when a Persian shah sought a counterbalance for a powerful regional Iranian tribe. The drought is terrible, the government not concerned as they lack political representation, as a sheikh admits freely. Tribe members seek to balance traditions with modernity, like schooling and jobs, sometimes in the city.
