Summary Zirconium is rather light weight considering it's a second row transition metal. It is used as cladding for nuclear fuel rods but tends to be contaminated with hafnium which is difficult to separate and interferes in nuclear reactions. Zirconium also reacts with steam which is a problem if a nuclear reactor get too hot.
