Romania: The children of Nicolae

Summary In 1966, the infamous Decree 770 of Nicolae Ceausescu entered into force, by virtue of which women and doctors were imprisoned for termination of pregnancy. This was aimed to rapidly increase the birth rate, but its "side effect" was tens of thousands of unwanted children every year who went to orphanages. Violence, hunger, and poverty are memories of nearly 2 million people that lived in these orphanages. Today, their childhood experiences still hinder their normal lives. Kulczyk Foundation supported the renovation of a Casa Pinocchio children's home in Romania, inhabited by 32 children.
