S1.E10 ∙ Smile Said the Queen

The time is 1850 and the place is the Austro-Hungarian Empire. An uprising against Emperor/Kaiser Franz Josef has been suppressed and all have been forgiven---if still living---except a young Captain, Joseph Foldessy, who is working, under an assumed name, for Count Graf Paalen. He falls in love with Christ'l, daughter of the Imperial Forester. The Emperor arrives as the guest of the count, and Christ'l runs across him in the forest and, mistaking him for a minor court official, detain him for poaching. Foldessy's true identity becomes known to the secret police and he is arrested. Christ'l appeals to her newly-found friend, whose real identity she does not know, to get her an audience with the Emperor so that she can plead Foldessy's case. The request is granted and she then learns the identity of her new friend, who grants a pardon to her lover, who immediately surmises that Christ'l and the Emperor are having an affair. The Emperor straightens that incorrect assumption out, also.

Young Alvise's body is paralyzed, or at least he thinks so. He is infatuated by his beautiful aunt Lea. What starts as innocent therapy and care soon develops into strange erotic and psychological battle between them.

A pair of barbers are driven out of business because most of the men in their small town are drafted into the army. When their attempts to also enlist fail, they decide to form a Home Defense Force, and wind up getting involved with a gang of crooks.

Christopher Reynolds, an American flying with the R.A.F, is shot down over German-occupied Holland and is given shelter by a Dutch family. Posing as the insane husband of the daughter of the house, Anita Wolverman, Reynolds convinces the German officer quartered there, Major Zellfritz, with the necessity for her divorce decree to be granted. After the court hearing, Anita, goes to manage a home for retired ladies and, persuaded by Reynolds, tries to gain military information from the German officer. After her former husband escapes from the mental asylum, his exploits are blamed on Reynolds. With the help of the old ladies and Anita, who "remarries" him, Reynolds escapes to England in a stolen German airplane.

Three US sailors fight German U-boats in World War I aboard a decoy ship and try to win Ginger Rogers who works on the Coney Island midway.
