Summary Ivo Andric as a bridge between the cultures of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and, the new, Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, suffers blows on both banks. But the Drina - the river of his childhood taught him to tame the currents and Andric manages to emerge stronger and brighter than ever. His literary work - is crowned with the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1961. Among others, Andric also receives congratulations for the award from Josip Broz Tito, even though their relationship was complicated and controversial. Finally, Andric experiences the golden autumn of his turbulent life and career only to have, as he says, "in an instant, all that was mine is burnt out".
