Falcon Market (Qatar)

Summary Founded more than 100 years ago in Doha, the capital of Qatar, the Waqif souk is the city's most significant architectural heritage site. Its run-down infrastructure was thoroughly renovated in 2006, highlighting all the beauty of the old architecture. This market, very popular among both Qataris and tourists, includes restaurants, traditional clothing, spices, perfume, local crafts and gold. But its most impressive feature is still its falcon market. This section of the souk was established by the government in 2008. Qatar's many falconry enthusiasts come here to find everything they need for their pet birds, and for those they wish to train for hunting or flight competitions. The market even has a state-of-the-art veterinary clinic exclusively for falcons. The birds are so important in Qatar that their healthcare is almost entirely subsidized by the government. In the world's richest country, falcon ownership is a symbol of power that inspires respect. Some of the birds are sold at auction for more than $35,000. Falconry is a favourite sport of many Qataris, who are not afraid to keep spending lavishly once they have acquired a falcon. Techniques for training falcons have evolved a great deal: the birds are identified by microchips and GPS units, and they are lured with drones with live prey attached. Watch as one of the raptors glides gracefully, spots its prey in the desert below and swoops in for the kill at an incredible speed: an unforgettable sight. At a time when skyscrapers are taking over Doha's urban landscape, this type of hunting gives Qataris a strong connection with their roots. No expense of time or money is spared in training the wild birds. In return, the falcons teach their masters about patience, loyalty and dignity.
