Santa Fe Art Colony Diaspora: Hosted by Eva Malhotra

Summary The Santa Fe Art Colony, situated in the industrial zone of Los Angeles, was established in 1986 with public funds through the Community Redevelopment Agency. It allowed for the adaptive reuse of factory buildings to be used as studios where artists could live and create. A 30-year agreement set rent restrictions on 85% of the 57 units. That agreement expired in 2017. Because the previous owners didn't notify tenants of a rent increase, the city imposed a stay until 2019. Then the buildings were purchased by a Miami-based investor, The Fifteen Group, which promptly raised the rents on all the units - some by over 300%. Almost all the artists living and working in the Art Colony - many of whom called it home for over 30 years are not able to afford the high rents. Consequently, they must move out by July 15, 2022. This is not a unique story. It is a microcosm of what is taking place in all major metropolitan areas in the US and around the world. These cities are now blighted with tens of thousands of homeless encampments.
