Summary Ashley joins in Salt Ash one of the many selfless, unpaid rural branches of the 70,000 strong volunteer firemen of New South Wales, a populous state of Australia. Here, each year, many lives and properties are destroyed by potentially enormous bush fires. They prove a friendly lot, accepting anyone (male or female) in reasonable physical condition, where 'hazing' is lighting the traditional barbecue to 'fatten up' the skinny recruit. Training is realistic. After some fun on a colleague's sheep ranch, Ashley's first heroic feat proves a cat rescue from a tranquil tree. Next alert is a real bush fire, but he does well.
