Summary In Wharfedale, Ted Mason is preparing to take part in a fell race, running two miles up the steep side of Burnsall Fell, a local hill, and back down again. He is training with fellow competitor Fred Bosomworth. Ted comes fourth, beating Fred. Near Carperby in Wensleydale, John Heslegrave and Dave Tait are in charge of the Otley and Yorkshire Dales branch of the Dry Stone Wallers Association who are building their first dry-stone bridge over water. Having built the bridge, it is a tense moment when the wooden former is removed. In Malham, a female blacksmith, Annabelle Bradley, is making three cartwheel-style chandeliers for the local pub, The Buck Inn. Her design features wrought iron versions of typical dales objects such as a shepherd's crook and a ram's horns.
