Self-harm is spiralling in Britain. It is estimated that two teenagers in every classroom have been driven by depression or anxiety to hurt themselves. In this moving and sometimes disturbing film, actress and writer Meera Syal meets young people who self-harm to find out why they do it, and how parents like herself can avoid it happening to their own children.

They were 13, 17, 19 and 50. They yearned for love, freedom and fulfillment. Evaporating Borders is a visual essay on displacement and the search for identity. Told through a series of vignettes portraying the lives political migrants on the island of Cyprus, the film explores global restrictive practices on migrating populations.

We wanted to make a film about a teenage mother. We met Joana in a casting that took place in Setubal, in the Bela Vista neighborhood. She appeared to us as a porcelain doll, small, fragile, pale, with a little hair bow. Little by little, she crumbled apart, revealing a charming complexity. We were conquered by the duality of strength and fragility, freedom and incarceration, joy and sorrow. The intimacy and complicity we were able to establish with her made this film possible. In Cat's Cradle, we share her with everyone else.
