Summary Seventy years ago, in 1943, the so called Department of Salubrity merged with the Ministry of Social Assistance, to conform a new ministry that became the foundation of our current system of public health. Since then, intensive immunization campaigns, the introduction of healthy hygiene habits and the growth of basic medical services, reduced infectious diseases and increased life expectancy in Mexico. Today in the context of so-called "chronic degenerative diseases," the Ministry of Health organizes the government's efforts to achieve quality and equitative universal coverage, so all Mexicans, without exception, can live a productive and dignified life for themselves, their families and their country.
