S1.E3 ∙ Mesopotamia: Return to Eden

As North Texas prepared to host one of the world's largest sporting events, more than 44,000 children were making plans of their own. They coordinated neighborhood clean-ups, a hospital toy drive, anti-graffiti campaigns, food drives, and more. And in the end, they discovered that heroism and leadership aren't only characteristics of all-star athletes. A feature-length documentary from award-winning filmmaker Mark Birnbaum, 'SLANT 45: The Movie' is by turns comical and poignant and offers an intimate look at children who, through ingenuity, courage and spirit, embarked on a year-long journey to identify problems and improve the lives of those around them. 'SLANT 45: The Movie' shows that young people are not only our future; they have the power to change it for the better.

Part archival film, part personal diary, this film looks at the relationship between film and memory.

Jo Ok Sim together with her family goes around the world until arriving in Ushuaia in 1974, being the first Koreans to live there. The documentary proposes to reflect on the value of work and the identity of a Korean family that lived longer in Argentina than in their homeland.

There is a magical island unlike any other on Earth. Less than a quarter of a square mile, Isla Rasa is so small it is difficult to find on a map. Some creatures, however, do not need a map. Generations of seabirds have found a way to this enchanted isle of Eden in the heart of Mexico's Gulf of California. For three months every spring this flat and barren rock comes to life as over a half a million birds gather on one tiny island to multiply. Soon hundreds of thousands of chicks will greet the world head on, learn how to live, struggle to survive and eventually take to the sky-- a bird's eye view of the circle of life.

The issei came as Japanese and remained Japanese in a foreign land. The nisei grew up as Japanese Americans and were forced to prove their equality as Americans. The sansei grew up American. Confident of themselves as Americans, the sansei, yonsei, and gosei generations are comfortable in their search for ethnic identity, but they take pride in being local. Five themes, Americanization, Freedom to Choose, The Samurai, Roles, and Hawaiian Japanese, explore human values and critical issues of continuity and change in Hawaii. While the themes are centered on being Japanese in Hawaii, the messages are relevant to all immigrant groups who left their homeland.
