Summary This documentary explores freak waves, up to 140 feet high, which for many years were thought to be no more than sailors' stories. The film reveals that they are not only real, but fairly common. It uses both recreation and actual footage to show the devastation and loss of life caused when freak waves have impacted ships, an oil platform, and have even caused loss of life on land (spoiler: don't approach a ninety-foot wave along the shore!). It further explores the way scientists study these waves in order to improve predicting them as well as surviving them through improving techniques to build ships which can withstand their punishing impacts.
