Week-end à Riga

Summary Beginning of the journey in Riga: Sophie arrives at the bed and breakfast "Diga home-stay" and is received by Dia and her husband Eric Millard.Then Sophoe takes a tramway to the center of Riga: she meets there Anna Mutore , translator and begin a walk through the old town: Riga Doms (formally the Cathedral Church of Saint Mary), the Three Brothers medieval building and the Church of Saint Peter: from the tower they can see Riga: Anna tells about the history of Riga and about the independence of Latvia in 1991.Then they follow the walk looking at the Art Nouveau buildings (end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century).Then Sophie sees on a place actors and cameramen: she meets the director Anna Viduleja who is filming a movie about the story of a painter 100 years ago.Later Sophie goes to the great market of Riga where he meets the chef Dzintars Kristovskis who was buying fennel seeds and dried champignons: they taste some Latvian sauerkraut.They seat also a bread with meat and travel to Ligatne (National Park of the Gauja): there Oskars Okonovs, a very pleasant guide shows them a natural cave where farmers store potatoes and vegetables.Then they have a walk through the forest, Dzintars picks bitter cress and others herbs: finally they arrive at the restaurant and Dzintars prepare a soup with beef and some herbs for Sophie.After that Sophie takes her breakfast with Diga and they make a tandem bicycle tour in the neighborhood (nice wooden houses and residences).Sophie travels to Liepaja where she meets Lize Vainovska in a workshop (wearing in a loom):they go to the beach to find amber ; they meet there Ivars Dejus (Lize's husband) and Sophie finds some pieces of amber: Later Sophie and Lize take a hot bath in a Latvian sauna.On the next day Sophie meets Janis Maslovskis at the old airport of Riga (typical Soviet architecture): they have a flight over Riga and later they meet the Riga Gospel Choir (Janis is member of this choir.): Kristine Praulije is the director of this choir and the choir sings a song.Later Sophie Sophie says goodbye to Eric and Diga and travels to the castle of Rundale: the director of the castle ,Imants Lacmanis, tells her the story of the castle built in 1736 for a Courland duke and used as a school after the first world war and later as a grain silo during the Soviet period: she visits with some rooms of this baroque castle and later goes to the garden where the gardener Edgars Nielands is pruning the tree (Sophie helps him pruning some trees).After that Sophie s in Riga: at the port she meets Juris Zigelis and they make a kayak trip through the canal of Riga. Besides we see zooms about the independence of Latvia (a young businessman, a TV presenter, the human chain in the Baltic countries), about the great market of Riga build in 1930 (Unesco World heritage site, the cold storage rooms, the fishermen), about the birch juice and the balzam drink, about the seaside resort of Jurmala and its wooden houses, about the choirs in Ltvia and the prison of Karosta (interactive visit organized by comedians).
