Summary Beginning of the journey in Yogyakarta: the hotel was a mansion of a Chinese trader which became hotel in 1942 and was also the office of the president Sukarno (when Yogykarta was the capital of Indosia for three years).Jérôme meets Shinta Restu, a nurse and Javanese traditional dancer (she has danced for the sultan of Yogyakarta): they visit a great market (spices), they speak about the smile, eat chicken with fried noodles listening to a guitarist singing a song about Yogyakarta; later Shinta invites Jérôme to see a traditional dance class at her house.Then they visit a part of the palace of the sultan build in the XIII century (the sultan used to pray and rest in this part).Then Jérôme travels to Parangtritis , a seaside with a great cliff and meets there Bayu Anggoro who was pastry chef and now sports coach: they have a moment of paragliding: then Jérôme meets Bardi, a fisherman who came back from the sea, he buys him some lobsters and helps Bardi's wife to prepare the lobsters with lemongrass, tomatoes, basil and onion: then the lobsters are fried.Next stop: the Bromo volcano with Rani, the female guide and also marathon runner: she has studied French and Mandarin at the University: they climb to the top of the volcano, Jérôme throws a bouquet of flowers as offering into the crater.Rani explains that near the volcano are living the Tenggerese people, an Hinduist minority which is preparing a ceremony : the offerings will be cooked rice pyramids and ornate carrots.Rani and Jérôme go to the procession , they meet Rani's brother who is priest; each family shows its rice pyramid, Jérôme wears a sarong like the Tenggerese men and enjoys the procession.Later he meets the couple of Yanti Rubi and Christophe Davaud: they visit the Buddhist temple of Borobudur, and then Kalegen , the home village of Yanti, they see rice terraces and visit a tofu factory, in the night they eat fried tofu. Besides we know about the women's emancipation (the district mayor who promotes the religious tolerance, the association of women producing batik) , the retired sultan and his second-daughter Nurastuti Wijareni who manages the palace and promotes the Javanese arts, the traditional wedding in Java (bride and broom were the same costume), the leisure (bull races in the island of Madura and singing birds competitions), the Kawah Ijen volcano and the life of the sulfur miners and the eating of the grasshoppers.
