Summary Beginning of the journey in La Panne (Belgium): Sophie meets on the beach the fisher woman Nele Bekaert with her horse Axel; at low tide Nele and her horse pull the nets through the sea and collect prawns: the very small prawns are given back to the sea and then the biggest must be cooked . Then they go to a little restaurant and they eat prawns croquettes and French fries.Later Sophie is in Furnes (in Dutch Veurne) where she meets Joris Goens, the town crier (he has won the title of European best crier in England): Joris and Sophie goes to a building and Joris announces the next festival of the town.They go to the Church of Saint-Nicolas from where they can see the belfry and the town hall of Furnes and back to the town they sing the song of the bells: they eat a Flemish dish called " Potdesvlees", meat of veal, rabbit and chicken and go to the belfry of the town where Joris says goodbye to the town.Then Sophie travels to Cassel (French Flanders) where she meets Emmanuel de Quillacq (Manu), a gardener and landscaper who has restored the " Jardin des Récollets" (a former convent): they visit the house with its living room and dinning room and they have a walk through the gardens.They leave the gardens and arrive at a place where people practice vertical archery (a typical Flemish sport) and later they they visit the town of Cassel. Then Sophie travels to Esquelbecq where she meets Bruno Desmondt, the maker of automatons, they go to an estaminet to shown the automatons.. Then Sophie is in Bailleul (French Flanders) where she sees the Flemish bowling (jeu de la boule flamande).At Zuydcoote, on the north sea, Sophie meets Bruno Pruvost in a bunker of the Atlantic Wall and then they go to the seaside where they see shipwrecks (the English Army evacuated there about 38.000 French and British soldiers). Later Sophie meets Jean-Michel Legrand, a pilot and have an air plane tour over the Flanders.In Vieux-Berquin Sophie meets Claudine Depooter , the manager of the revue at the Cabaret of Vieux Berquin.Some hours later Sophie arrives at Saint-Omer, a famous marshland, she meets there Rémy Colin, a boat carpenter who invites her to make a boat tour through the canals of the marshlands: they see truck farmers working on their fields and later at the home of Rémy they eat waffles.Last stop: Sophie meets Audrey in her brewery, she helps Audrey to prepare beer: they go the "Festival de la bière artisanale" in Sainte-Marie Cappel where people enjoy tasting local beers. Besides we see zooms about the Flemish town of Bergues in France, about the battle of Peene at Nordpeene and the sport of armored combat in Lille (France), about Bruges, the medieval town with its 83 meters high belfry ( the bell ringer Frank Deleu explains the competition between the Flemish towns for having the highest belfry, the best bells and the best best bell songs), , about the traditional Flemish architecture in Ellezelles, about the breeding of the Flemish horse (Vlaams paard in Dutch) and the renewal of this work horse in Flanders, about the chef Florent Ladeyn and his original cooking (edible boletus,pigeon and spices like water pepper), about the dunes of Flanders ( the naturalist Juliette Martin showing to young boys and girls the ecologic system of the dunes), about the bird observers in the dunes in October (starlings and cormorants), about Claudine and Patrick the managers of the Cabaret du Nord, about Nicolas Nudelle , the postman who is the unique postman of France who travels by boat to deliver the mail through the Saint-Omer Marshland and about the guild of the cauliflower in Saint-Omer.
