Summary Beginning of the journey in Palermo: Sophie meets Chiara Utro ("Addio Pizzo association") and they walk through the historical center : at the market of Capo and they see a large zucchini used in the preparation of pastas.Then they arrive at the shop "La Coppola storta" where they meet Tindara Agnello who explains them the story of the Sicilian flat cap called Coppola.Then they visit the "Palazzo dei Normanni or Royal Palace": Giovanni Battista Scaduo of the Sicilian Regional Assembly receives them and explains that this palace was built by Roger II of Normandy who became the first Norman king of Sicily.Then they meet Salvatore Meccio, an art restorer who shows the wall paintings (under these paintings there were frescoes who will be restored).Later Chiara and Sophie take drink a coffee at the cafe of the Association Addio Pizzo: a group of Sicilian businessmen who refuse to pay for the protection of the mafia.After that Sophie travels to Montevago where she meets Stefano and Sergio Lentile who grow olive trees and produce olive oil: Sophie help them to pick olive: then they cross the village which has been destroyed by an earthquake: they eat a bread with a touch of olive oil and cheese and they drink red wine: a man sings a traditional Sicilian song.Later Sophie travels to Trapani where she meets the chef Angelo Bemivegna who enjoys to take pictures of the fishermen, they go to the fish market,a fishmonger is singing a song and they buy sardines.Later they arrive at the restaurant (Cucina alla Trapanese) and Angelo prepares for them the sardines and pastas con cauliflowers.After that Sophie travels to Marettimo (Aegadian Islands), Vitto Vaccaro receives her and tells her that Marettimo is the wildest island of the archipelago (many endemic plants).They go to the hotel of Fausto Gobbo and later they make a boat tour, they visit a cave with the boat and arrive at a little museum: there are pictures of men of Marettimo who emigrated to California.After that Sophie travels to Santa Rita where she helps the baker Maurizio Spinello to make bread: Maurizio explains that Santa Rita had before 80 families and now only ten persons, but he organizes events about the traditional bread and hope that other people will return to the village.Later Sophie is the the Greek-Roman theater of Taormina where she meets Giulia Bacilliere, a naturalist guide: in the old town they eat a cannolo, they visit the potter Marco Monforte and finally enjoy the panorama on the seaside.On the next day Sophie and Giulia are climbing the Etna volcano, they cross a cave and reach a high place: Giulia has a surprise for Sophie: pistachios grown on the Etna slopes and Sophie gives Giulia the bread she prepared in Santa Rita. Besides we see zooms about the family Buffa (the restaurant of the family, the importance of the family), about the Sicilian mafia (the terrific 1980-1990 years with the highest criminality, the fight for changing the image of Corleone), about the Arabic influence in Sicily ( Mazara del Valo with its casbah, the female singer, the Arabic pastry, the Arabic agricultural heritage), about the seduction in Sicily (the Vespa, the compliments), about the free diving ( Enzo Maiorca and his family),and about Catania the town built with volcanic stones ( the snows of the Etna, the agriculture on the slopes of the volcano, the vineyard of Sebastiano Costa, the eruptions of the Etna)
