Tired of conforming to the worlds definition of beauty, actress Yolanda Lee goes behind the camera to film a documentary along with Richard Lewis about the social issues surrounding black women and their hair. At the risk of damaging her career, she decides to cut off her trademark curly natural. What starts out as a hairstyle change sparks heated conversations about race, relationships and charging dogs. During production she begins to question her desires, sacrifices and finds the courage to just let go. What starts out as a documentary about black women's hair ends in a documentary about one woman's journey.

Every month more than 4,000 babies are born in South Africa with HIV. At the same time around 30,000 adults are infected with the virus and over 22,000 die of Aids. Approximately 40,000 women are raped - every month. The film "Status of Life" accompanies four young women in South Africa's townships and in Lesotho. How does life feel for these women beneath the omnipresent risk of getting infected or becoming a rape victim? How is it possible to live a halfway normal life under these extreme circumstances? Humor is one method, denial another. Their common ground: the hope for a fulfilled life, with and without the virus.
