This impressive psychological thriller about a sensitive German adolescent grappling with his father's suicide and his mother's new boyfriend plays out against the eerie woods and fantastic rock formations of the Brittany Coast.

Mario is in Hannover to work as a miner but after loosing his job he decides to go back to Italy. When Totonno steals his passport to avoid the police and later on he offers him a new job as "magliaro" (cloth seller), Mario changes his mind and decides to follow Totonno to Hamburg. In Hamburg, Totonno and his friends have to sell Mayer's cloth but they meet with the hostility of a Polish gang and Mario falls in love with Paula Mayer.

Noel Annequin is the black sheep of a social-climbing bourgeois family who married for love and stayed in the country while his professional brothers were improving their social position. When the movie opens, a man is just re-emerging into the world after a nervous breakdown caused by the traumatic loss of his wife while his son was just an infant. It's 7 years later, and the man has repressed the memories of his wife's death, and spends his time working a menial job and leaving small gifts on the front porch of the home where his son is now being raised. Eventually, the man and the boy come face to face and, as he and the boy start to bond, the man begins to remember fragments of the buried trauma. While this experience propels him inevitably back to mental trauma, He tries his best to connect with his son in a critical way.

A couple travel from Manchester to London for their daughter's 18th birthday at an unknown location. As they travel they reflect upon their relationship and how they became estranged from their child.
