Der Sturm

Set amid the turbulent events of Zimbabwe's historic 2017 "takeover" from Robert Mugabe, Mirage tells the thrilling story of three women's plot to escape from one of the country's notorious maximum-security prisons. Tambu, who is serving a five-year sentence for stealing a chicken at her rural home village, hears about her daughter's ongoing abuse by her own brother and the consequent mental illness of her daughter. A raging drive to rescue her sees Tambu contemplating the unthinkable. Together with fellow inmates Zoe and Memo, the trio plot on an elaborate scheme to escape the prison in order to take back control over their own lives. On the other side of their jail bars, an internal struggle unfolds among the prison officers as they jostle for power and the privileges that come with ascending to the position of Prison Warden. As a side effect of this power struggle, an opportunity for escape arises and a concrete plan begins to take shape in Tambu's head. As she fills Zoe and Memo in on the plan, the trio decide to strike during a church ceremony by the popular prison pastor. Meanwhile an unlikely collusion between some opportunistic prisoners and a crooked prison officer jeopardizes the trio's plan. With time fast running out, the three inmates launch their audacious plot. But their quest for freedom doesn't go as planned and the resultant turmoil sucks the three women into a battle for survival as they seek refuge high up in the mountains. Tambu is torn between helping her friends and rescuing her daughter as she starts to question the very nature of freedom and if it's even possible to escape from the "prison" of your past.

Two teenagers face the differences of their parents and third parties; this leads them to face their own afflictions and to know tragedies that cloud their vision, to the point of beginning to live the pain of a new life, putting aside their comfort, their ideologies and questioning themselves for who they really are.

A drama following multiple characters as they weave through their daily lives searching for happiness. However, happiness to each of them is defined differently. The film moves through its various stories without attempting to make character intersections any more meaningful than the random nature of life itself; the effect is a sprawling mosaic of New York City and its everyday people, living everyday lives.
