Jay, Lynn, Joey, and Fuller have been best friends since elementary. Now in their 30's, life hasn't turned out how they hoped it would be when they were sitting around and daydreaming of adulthood. Lynn is an aspiring singer hoping to make it big even while she feels she's too old and too late, Joey is a poet struggling with borderline personality disorder and the demons that come with it, Fuller never finished law school and feels like a failure, and Jay is a laid back pot head RN trying to bring warmth, support, and love to his ailing friends lives to keep the group together. Even as life throws them off every chance, these lifelong friends hold on to each other with loyalty, love...and a lot of screwing with each other.

Marie-Hélène, a shy Normandy teenager, speaking little English, works as an au pair for a family in Brighton, Sussex, to improve her English while also adjusting to the culture shock.

Maksim, a young and promising ethnographer and postgraduate student, arrives in the village of Rusalino to collect old folklore songs, tales and traditions for his papers in 1993. It was Liuba, a student of the same college, who persuaded him to come to this village, because her aunt, Varvara, lives in Rusalino and the area is famous for having preserved many old songs and rites. The girl believes sincerely that their scientific journey will help them get closer, because she is incredibly in love with Maxim. Liuba does not even suspect that here, in Rusalino, Maksim will meet Rada, a Gypsy girl, who will steal his heart for the rest of his life.
