Nate is ready to quit. It's his final year of graduate school, and his attempts to build a device that could be a breakthrough in quantum computing have only led to failure and self-doubt. He struggles to balance the "two states of Nate" - his emotional side troubled by a turbulent childhood and frustrations in science, and his rational side fueled by curiosity and ambition. Matters escalate when his work is "scooped" by a competing lab. If he doesn't get the device working first, his career will be in jeopardy. Can Nate make it as a scientist?

The summer after graduating from college, a chance ad in the newspaper set Erin on the path towards a life she never could have imagined possible: protein biology, long-distance running, single motherhood.
