Young doctor Bradley Yates has been trying to come up with a serum to counteract blood poisoning, with no results. Exhausted, he takes a rest in the Blue Ridge Mountains and stays in a small mountain community. When a young schoolteacher comes to town a romance develops between her and Bradley, but the local gossips have spread rumors that he has seduced Talithy, a local girl, and will abandon her for the teacher. Complications ensue.

In the grounds of a dark, deserted mansion, a blackmailer collects money from his victim. Meanwhile, Peter (John Horsley, THE FALL AND RISE OF REGINALD PERRIN), chemist and philanderer, realises that the drinks of himself and his mistress, Madeline, have been poisoned. He phones Dr. Cole but Madeline dies. But when Mrs. Cole is brutally murdered and Peter is the chief suspect, Peter's snubbed fiancée takes up the case.

When Reg Priest the local Mr Big, sends him a car to valet, his assistant finds a body in the boot.
