Au début du siècle, après un séjour de quatre ans aux États-Unis, la famille Bernier revient s'installer à Saint-Jean-des-Bois, un petit village de la Mauricie. Le chef de famille, Joseph, est déchiré entre son amour pour sa femme Célina et le souvenir de la vie facile qu'il menait aux États-Unis. Laurianne, une de ses filles, semble avoir hérité du tempérament fougueux de ses parents. Ainsi aime-t-elle son oncle Jérémie, deux fois veuf, qui a pour elle le même attrait incestueux. Cette relation scandaleuse pour l'époque est néanmoins tolérée par le curé Normandin qui accepte de bénir leur union.
