Intended as the concluding film in the trilogy on the modern history of Taiwan began with Beiqing Chengshi (1989), this film reveals the story through three levels: a film within a film as well as the past and present as linked by a young woman, Liang Ching. She is being persecuted by an anonymous man who calls her repeatedly but does not speak. He has stolen her diary and faxes her pages daily. Liang is also rehearsing for a new film that is due to go into production soon. The film, entitled Haonan Haonu, is about a couple Chiang Bi-yu and Chung Hao-tung who returns to China to participate in the anti-Japanese movement in China in the 1940s and are arrested as communists when they go back to Taiwan.

Revolve around the romance between these six characters, that transcends age and other norms.

Arham has a little friend named Husna in his hometown in Bogor. Even though they secretly love each other, their relationship is revealed, and their love story continues down the aisle. However, Husna had an acute illness, namely brain cancer, and was given a life sentence that would not last long. Arham, with firm determination, promised to accompany Husna until the end of her life. Even though Husna and his family encouraged Arham to continue his education, Arham reluctantly decided to move on and separate from his beloved wife in order to complete his studies. On the other hand, Zilka, a young woman who has fallen into a dark world, tries to migrate to the right path. He needs someone who can be a guide in his new life. Meeting Arham gave Zilka hope, because Arham was considered a figure who could hopefully guide her to a better life.

When an undergraduate commits suicide, his best friend Tom Betancourt is sent down from university because he did nothing to prevent the death, which he felt was a choice his friend had a right to make.
