Summary Ballet Noir is a short documentary about the challenges young African-American ballerinas face as they try to break into the predominantly white industry of professional ballet. These challenges produce a sort of glass ceiling for talented black dancers, given the uniformity, body-type and specific image traditionally desired by the industry. While some progress has been made, the rosters of many of the nation's top ballet companies include few African-American dancers and rarely feature them in leading roles.
