Ballet Noir

Summary Ballet Noir is a short documentary about the challenges young African-American ballerinas face as they try to break into the predominantly white industry of professional ballet. These challenges produce a sort of glass ceiling for talented black dancers, given the uniformity, body-type and specific image traditionally desired by the industry. While some progress has been made, the rosters of many of the nation's top ballet companies include few African-American dancers and rarely feature them in leading roles. Homer Bryant's Chicago Multicultural Dance Center is trying to change that by bringing the art of classical ballet to kids of color. View more details
