He simply can not pay for his entry into the Underworld. Desperate to retire, Charon and Hermes pressure Menippus into various mercenary jobs and money-making schemes. But either Menippus' many vices, or his actual reluctance to actually die and enter the Underworld ensure that every mission ends in failure. Through a series of misadventures, the comic trio meet parody versions of popular culture figures.
