Within the walls of the trendiest Chicago restaurants, behind the closed doors of private dinner parties, and on the banks of the Seine in Paris, OPEN TABLES explores true love, love lost and the importance of a good main course.

Joe Gresham is a hard-working but reticent congressman from Massachusetts. Reporter Alice Kingsley arrives in Washington, DC hired by Gilbert Nunnally, a tabloid columnist and cynic who wants Alice to uncover a ripe political scandal. They target "No Comment Joe" Gresham, and she begins developing a story on him, telling him it will be a benign "profile." Gresham is struggling with a genuine legislative dilemma, weighing the funding of a ship building facility which would favor his own district against broader national defense requirements. To get to know him better-and to dig up some appropriate dirt, Alice agrees to travel with Joe to his home district, where she meets his mother and observes him in his local context. She finds Gresham's wholesome image appears unfeigned and becomes torn between her commission to write a "tell-all" story and her growing attraction to Joe.

Don Martin is a star hockey player with the Wildcats until he is barred from the game for hitting a referee. Through the actions of Chris, Don is able to get a job with Buzz Fletcher's ice-show as the novelty act. Chris trains with Don and he is a success, and they marry. But Gale is also interested in Don and when Don has a chance to leave and join Jack's premiere show, Gale takes him drinking. As an alcoholic, he is in no shape to skate for Jack, and Buzz has Chris do a routine. Her act is great and Jack wants her, without Don, for his ice-skating show. Don leaves her to allow her to go on to stardom.

Katie just wants to keep her career on track, but when she meets Brent, love finds its way into her heart despite her best efforts to keep it out. Over time, the couple fight to stay together until Brent chooses to leave for war.
