Al Ritmo del Agua

Al Ritmo del Agua

Paula, a professional swimmer, tries to recover from a shoulder injury that cost her her place on the country's national team. Her long recovery process leads her to face family problems, her mother, Yolima, suffers from Alzheimer's and no longer remembers her, leading Paula to question her own identity and meaning of life. The uncertainty of her injury and Alzheimer's, create constant conflict for a person who tries to avoid it as much as she can. While in practice Paula re-injures the shoulder and is forced to use steroids in order to recover faster and re-enter the team. As her mother's Alzheimer's worsens, Paula must endure emotional abuse from her mother and absence from her father, Eduardo. With some non-sport help, Paula manages to recover in time for another opportunity in the team, but her relationships worsen. Once she manages to regain her spot on the team, her relationship with the team coach falls apart, he doesn't respect her and is focused on a new swimmer, Maria Jose, a younger and faster rookie who looks up to Paula. The team coach forces Paula to compete with Maria Jose for the only spot Colombia will have for the next Pan American Games, which forces Paula to develop an aggressive relationship with Maria Jose. While Yolima's Alzheimer's absorbs the integrity of the family, Eduardo decides to leave home for a while, forcing Paula to take responsibility for her mother's care. The time she invests in Yolima's care leads to a drastic decline in Paula's athletic performance, and this makes the coach decide to relegate her to the bench, in the shadow of Maria José. A series of unfortunate events force Paula to rethink the direction of her life and the way she has built the relationships that surround her, especially those that have arisen around the sport.
